Exhibitions
Every Thursday night, local and visiting musicians gather at The Historic Fries Theatre for a lively old-time and bluegrass jam session. Known as “The Jam at the Dam”*, this free event welcomes everyone—whether you’re a seasoned player, a beginner, or just a fan of great music. The atmosphere is one of camaraderie, where tradition is passed down one tune at a time.
* The Jam at the Dam alludes to the landmark Fries dam on the New River.
Fries has long been a place where folks come together to dance and listen to music, and The Historic Fries Theatre keeps that tradition alive with scheduled dances and concerts throughout the year. Featuring live bands playing everything from classic Appalachian fiddle tunes to country two-step tunes, these events are a lively celebration of community spirit.
Music runs deep in Fries’ history. Exhibits at The Historic Fries Theatre showcase the town’s pivotal role in the founding of country music. From the early recordings made by Henry Whitter in 1923—some of the first commercial country music records—to the musicians who continue to carry on the tradition today, these displays honor the legacy of Fries as a musical landmark.
