The peak of the spring wildflower season lasts from late March through May, with a constantly changing array of blooms sparkling on the forest floor.

Some of the best viewing is located between the Dixon Ferry Bridge and Double Shoals. This stretch is easy to reach from Fries: by bike from downtown Fries, and by foot from the Park-and-Bike area at New River Side Store and Deli about two miles downriver. The best viewing times are in the morning, before the trail gets shady.

Spring highlights include such wildflowers as:

  • Michaux’s Saxifrage
  • Squaw root
  • Trilliums…in profusion!
  • Wild columbine
  • Fringed Polygala
  • Dutchman’s breeches

Beginning in 2023 Fries Tourism will hold two guided wildflower walks a year: mid-spring and late summer. Dates will be announced.
